Shared Gifting lets guests split the cost of any physical item on The Knot Registry. One guest purchases the item through The Knot, then selects “Split with Venmo” to request payments from other guests. The couple receives one gift, while guests handle their shares of the gift cost through Venmo.
Shared Gifting makes big-ticket registry items totally achievable. Couples can add higher-priced items, such as high-end appliances, luxury luggage or premium cookware, knowing guests can split the cost rather than pay for the entire gift individually.
How Shared Gifting works on The Knot Registry for couples and guests:
- Shared Gifting is automatically available for physical items on The Knot Registry. Couples do not need to turn it on.
- One guest pays the full price at checkout and receives the order confirmation.
- After purchasing the gift, the buyer selects “Split with Venmo” allowing them to choose up to 10 guests to request payments from using their Venmo usernames or phone numbers and then decide how to divide the cost.
- The couple receives the physical item at their preferred shipping address. The gift appears in their gift tracker as one purchased item from the guest who completed checkout. The buyer may add a gift note naming co-contributors during checkout.
How do I contribute to a registry gift with other guests?
- Purchase an eligible physical item on The Knot Registry.
- Include a gift note naming any contributing guests during the checkout process.
- Select “Split with Venmo” after checkout.
- The Knot automatically enters the purchase amount in Venmo and provides a suggested note referencing the gift and wedding details.
- Use Venmo contacts or search by Venmo username or phone number to select up to 10 guests you want to request payments from.
- Choose how to divide the cost among guests.
- Send the payment requests through Venmo.
The guest who completes checkout pays the full price up front. Other guests repay the buyer through Venmo.
Do I need the Venmo app to use Shared Gifting?
The guest who buys the gift needs the Venmo app to send payment requests.
- On mobile: After selecting “Split with Venmo,” the buyer will be taken to Venmo where The Knot automatically fills in the gift amount and provides a drafted note about the gift and couple. If the buyer doesn’t have the Venmo app installed, they will be directed to the app store to download it.
- On desktop: If the buyer is shopping The Knot Registry via desktop, selecting “Split with Venmo” will load a QR code that the buyer must scan to direct their request into the Venmo app.
If a co-contributor doesn't have Venmo installed, the Shared Gifting buyer can send a split request to their phone number or email. The recipient will get a text or email with instructions to download the free Venmo app and create a profile to complete their contribution.
Can I split a Shared Gift with someone who isn’t in my Venmo contacts?
The buyer does not need pre-saved Venmo contacts to use Shared Gifting on The Knot. They can search for co-contributors in Venmo by entering each guest’s Venmo username or phone number when sending the split request.
How many guests can contribute to a gift?
The guest who buys an eligible item can request payments from up to 10 people. The buyer needs each person’s Venmo username, email or phone number to send a request.
Who receives the gift and order confirmation?
The couple receives the physical gift at their preferred shipping address. The guest who purchases the item receives the order confirmation and sends the Venmo payment requests. During checkout, the buyer can add a gift note to show who contributed.
How does a Shared Gift appear in the couple’s gift tracker?
A Shared Gift appears as one purchased item from the guest who completed checkout. The Venmo payment requests between guests do not appear as separate registry purchases.
How do I let the couple know that multiple guests contributed to the Shared Gift?
To let the couple know who else contributed to a Shared Gift, the buyer may add a gift note during the checkout process that names any additional contributors. This note will be displayed within the tracker.
Note: Gift notes are not able to be edited after checkout.
What’s the difference between Shared Gifting and Group Gifting?
Shared Gifting (Available for Physical Items): Enables a guest to buy a physical item up front and instantly send Venmo payment requests to other guests to split the cost.
Group Gifting (Available for Cash Funds): Allows guests to make separate, individual contributions toward a single cash fund or custom goal over time directly on the couple’s registry.
